Abstract

Paper companies and other large landowners have been practicing intensive forest management in Maine since the early 1980s, with the aim of growing trees faster. S.D. Warren clearcut around 90 percent of the land it harvested each year as recently as 1990, and even last year was clear-cutting nearly two percent of its more than 900,000 acres. The effects of clear-cutting are still not well known, and most large landowners are participating in biodiversity and wildlife studies to produce baseline data on clearcuts.
