Abstract

Many high school athletes in Maine now have the benefit of certified athletic trainers, who work with sports teams to rehabilitate injuries and help players understand the potentially serious nature of those injuries. Jeremy Bryant, a senior at Mt. Blue High School and a member of the school's football team, is playing despite having fractured his kneecap a year ago. Bob McPhee, 37, suffered a brain stem contusion in 1976 while playing football for Rumford High School, and now does not speak. The proliferation of sports medicine specialists doesn't guarantee sound judgment when an athlete is involved in high school sports, and its possible that improved treatment methods may actually enhance a youngster's feelings of immortality.
