Abstract

Sen. George J. Mitchell, D-Maine, has intervened with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on behalf of Bowater Inc., which is seeking relicensing of its dams on the West Branch of the Penobscot River. The Commission decided to require Bowater to prepare an environmental impact statement, but Mitchell, in a letter to the Commission, said the statement will further delay the process and postpone efforts to modernize Bowater's mill in East Millinocket.
