Abstract

The Maine Center for Economic Policy today releases its biannual preview of state budget issues. The report, "Maine Choices 1997," suggests that some state government revenue policies are outdated examples of Fiscal conservatism that have failed in the past. The report calls for state government to finance more than half of the cost of public education in grades K-12; regulate managed care and expand access to Medicaid; reduce the number of inmates and explore options for alternative sentencing; and adequately fund for a revamped, community-based mental health service system.
