Abstract

Sandy Ritchie of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife reviewed Kenetech Windpower's assessment of the impact of wind turbines on migrating birds, and found faults with Kenetech's conclusions. Friends of the Boundary Mountains claims that the proposed Kenetech turbine towers would kill tens of thousands of birds. Kenetech has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and no one has offered a bid for the Boundary Mountains project. The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission issued a preliminary development permit to Kenetech for the project in August 1995, and the company has 18 months to act.
