Abstract

Wal-Mart opened outside of Lincoln in February 1993, resulting in last Christmas' closing of the town's J.J. Newberry's and November's closing of Osgood's department store. The Lincoln experience has been duplicated in places like Calais, Waterville and Skowhegan. A Wal-mart opened in Oxford in 1994, and sales in Norway dropped 18.4 percent the first year and 11.7 percent the next. Details.
