Abstract

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection contracted with Steve Kahl of the University of Maine Water Research Institute to examine the effects of forest practices on water quality. Kahl's report found that the Best Management Practices, a set of guidelines for reducing soil disturbances and stream sedimentation, is in need of revision, and that many Maine sites had poor compliance. The report emphasizes that protecting water quality helps maintain forest productivity, and the costs of water protection measures are offset by the long-term benefits. Details.
