Abstract
State representative Elizabeth Mitchell this month became Maine's first female Speaker of the House, and former state senator Dale McCormick was elected the state's first female State Treasurer. Former state representative Gail Chase took over another male preserve as state auditor, and women for the first time have achieved parity with men on the Legislative Council, the joint governing body of House and Senate leaders. The ascent of women to power is an historic event, but raises questions about why it is occurring now and what it will mean for the conduct of the state's public business. Details.
