Abstract

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife has been monitoring a large pair of canids, possibly wolves, near remote Spencer Lake. The Maine Land Use Regulation Commission last month rejected an application for a boat launch at the lake, and IF&W is appealing the decision. Matt Scott of IF&W denied the department has tried to keep the monitoring project secret because of a potential for wolves, an endangered species, to affect the plan for a boat ramp. IF&W is opposed to the reintroduction of wolves by human means, but would be required to manage the animals if they are naturally reintroduced to the state.
