Abstract

The Maine Alzheimer's Association reports there are 30,000 Mainers with the disease or similar dementia. Portland architect Paul Stevens designed the Alzheimer's Care Center in Gardiner, and in the ensuing years has become known as a pioneer in the design of health care facilities for people with the disease. SMRT, Stevens' firm, designed Sedgewood Commons in Falmouth, also for people with Alzheimer's. Both facilities were designed to allow patients to live their lives as normally and independently as possible. Details.
