Abstract

North Haven Community School, located on the island of North Haven in Penobscot Bay, has 88 students in grades K-12. The school has been at the center of a controversy that focuses on principal Barney Hallowell and his progressive approach to teaching. The conflict that has North Haven caught in a spiral of accusations, lawsuits, rumors and lies has nothing to do with education. The conflict is about class, and pits two different cultures, native islanders and summer colony people, against one another. Details.
