Abstract

The Maine Atlantic Salmon Task Force's plan for preserving the Atlantic salmon aims to maximize local control while using more than $20 million in federal funds. The conservation plan is intended to keep the salmon from being listed under the federal Endangered Species Act. Gov. King has threatened to sue two federal agencies if the salmon is listed under the act. Restore: The North Woods in 1993 petitioned to have the Atlantic salmon listed, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service responded with a proposal to list salmon in only seven rivers in Maine.
