Abstract

The Legislature is being asked to supersede the Indian Land Claims Settlement of 1979 to allow the Passamaquoddy Tribe to run a gambling casino in Calais. Under the 1979 settlement, the Indians agreed that with the exception of internal tribal matters they would be subject to the laws of Maine, and in order to put a casino on non-tribal land the provision would have to be superseded.
