Abstract

People looking for good ice cream in Maine have a number of options. Carl Barnes, 83, started Barnes Ice Cream in Augusta in 1935. Richard Smiley's parents started a dairy farm in Winslow in 1912, and the Smileys now produce 25,000 gallons of ice cream annually. Beal's Ice Cream was started 16 years ago in Gorham by Roy Beal, and the company has been owned for the past decade by Peter and Sheila Malia, who have opened three additional stores. Details.
