Abstract

A proposal by the state Department of Human Services to relax the state plumbing code regarding septic tank siting has drawn criticism from several conservation groups and the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. Since the plumbing code has been a de facto form of zoning that limited shorefront development, relaxing it would dramatically increase the amount of developable areas in the state.
