Abstract

The Great Ponds Task Force presented 35 recommendations to the Maine Legislature, including banning personal watercraft in the unorganized territories and limiting motors to ten horsepower or less on lakes of fewer than 200 acres. The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine offered a measure to ban jet skis in the unorganized territories. Legislators killed both measures and enacted a proposal to prohibit operation in a way that creates a nuisance. The Scarborough Town Council will consider a proposed ordinance that would prohibit anyone from operating a jet ski on any river in Scarborough unless the craft is at or below headway speed, and ban personal watercraft within most coastal waters and closer than 300 feet to shore.
