Abstract

Maine has three commercial classical radio stations, in addition to the still somewhat classical Maine Public Radio. Classical stations elsewhere have fallen by the wayside, leaving one to wonder what is the secret to the unusual success in Maine. MPR's membership has grown from 11,000 to 18,000 in the past five years, and the station raises around 43 percent of its annual budget from listeners. Maine's three commercial classical stations depend on a loyal audience of better educated, older, professional listeners, and many of the advertising dollars spent on classical music radio are from first-time advertisers.
