Abstract

The three-month elver season ended June 15, and prices were at $85 per pound, the lowest of the year. Prices had peaked at $350 per pound. Last year's harvest was well over 10,000 pounds, and this year's harvest could be higher. Maine has the only legal season for juvenile eels in the Northeast. The season was punctuated by violence and numerous violations. The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission is drafting a management plan for eels and horseshoe crabs.
