Abstract
Don Breen of Boston has put the 12,000-acre Saddleback Ski Area up for sale. The ski area is traversed by 2.7 miles of the Appalachian Trail, and includes the third largest alpine zone in Maine. The National Park Service has been trying to acquire land for the trail since 1983, but negotiations failed. The Saddleback Appalachian Trail section is the Appalachian Trail Conference's top priority, and is the largest single section of the trail still unprotected from private development. Details.
