Abstract

Third in a three-part series on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. Paper companies hold around 160,000 acres of forest in the mile area surrounding the waterway, while the state owns a 500-foot buffer. Seasonal camps are being built on company lands near the waterway, and without state action to limit or ban development key areas could be developed. The draft management plan for the Allagash Wilderness Waterway doesn't mention development or call for any further land acquisition. Conservationists are calling for further land acquisitions and bans on development. Details on the draft management plan.
