Abstract

Feature article on Acadia National Park, with a profile of Park Superintendent Paul Haertel, 56. Haertel's constant dilemma is balancing the preservation and protection of Acadia with providing for the enjoyment of all. A new transportation system for Mount Desert Island is intended to ease traffic and congestion on the narrow roads and lanes of MDI, and to give visitors and residents an alternative means of transportation. Acadia National Park has a backlog of $21.4 million in capital improvements identified by the National Park Service, with another $55.5 million in facilities yet to be evaluated.
