Abstract

Great Northern, a division of Bowater, has two paper mills, a sawmill and two million acres of timberland in Maine, making it the largest landowner in the state. Bowater is grouping together its woodlands and sawmill operations in an effort to increase profits, and is consolidating its newsprint and directory paper business. A corporate decision on a spending plan on the order of $150 million per mill in Maine could come as early as this month. Changes could mean fewer, higher-paying jobs, and a cutting policy that would include more mature stands. Details.
