Abstract

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection is continuing its investigation into the September 3 chemical leak at the Mead paper mill in Rumford. The leak involved 60 tons of two chemicals, and led to the release of chlorine dioxide gas and the hospitalization of three workers. Mary James of DEP said she feels the mill's recent switch from elemental chlorine bleaching to the use of chlorine bleaching contributed to the accident. Nick Bennett of the Natural Resources Council of Maine said the council is unhappy that chlorine dioxide is being used in Maine.
