Abstract

Voters in Atkinson next week will vote on whether to deorganize the town. Businessman and wilderness activist Charles FitzGerald, owner of 8,500 acres in Atkinson, and Rudy Engholm of Northern Wings, owner of 1,500 acres in the town, sold easements to Sweetwater Trust of Boston that will protect the land from development. FitzGerald's land represents 12.5 percent of Atkinson's tax base, and if the land is deemed tax-exempt other residents would have to make up the loss. Some residents are apparently interested in deorganization because it would lower overall taxes, especially education expenses. Details.
