Abstract

The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Organization, a group that certifies organic farms in Maine, says meeting federal guidelines proposed by the National Organics Program might be too expensive for small farmers, and if MOFGA can't change the rules, it may substitute another term, such as "locally grown" for "organic." Other complaints are that the Program would allow genetically engineered food to be certified as organic, and permit the irradiation of organic produce and the use of sludge as a fertilizer for organic produce.
