Abstract

Sen. Judy Paradis, D-Frenchville, is pushing for a state law to establish a moratorium on large hog production facilities, and to require permit restrictions and submission of nutrient management plans. The impetus for her bill is the current lack of oversight of large-scale hog farms, which have caused odors and environmental contamination elsewhere. Aroostook County has been targeted for several proposed hog farms, including a plan by Gilles Michaud, working with Armstrong Engineering in Caribou, to expand his potato farm to include hogs. Paradis maintains that in other states hog farms have started off small, and manure management became increasingly problematic as the farms got larger.
