Abstract

HoltraChem of Orrington on Friday released a significant amount of toxic substance into the Penobscot River, prompting the Maine Department of Environmental Protection to ask the Maine Attorney General's Office to take action against the company. HoltraChem and the DEP agreed to a $700,000 settlement in December following a series of toxic spills. The DEP and Gov. King are working on legislation that would impose stricter regulations on emissions from the facility. Plant manager Glenn Carr said the company is unwilling to abandon its mercury-based process.
