Abstract

FPL Energy of Florida has offered $846 million for Central Maine Power Co.'s generating assets. Michael Yackira, president of FPL, said Maine's hydroelectric assets were a key part of the attraction of the deal. Yackira said FPL has experience in windpower, solar geothermal and biomass, and wanted to add hydroelectric to the mix. FPL might play a role in reviving the defunct Kenetech Windpower project in the Boundary Mountains, and is co-owner of the project with Enron's Zond Development. FPL purchased a number of oil-fired plants, and some might be converted to natural gas.
