Abstract

Legislation creating the state School Revolving Renovation Fund provides just $20 million for the fund, despite a commission recommendation for $30 million. James Rier Jr., chair of the State Board of Education and the special commission appointed to study school renovation, says 389 of the state's 725 school buildings have health and safety problems. Maine's school buildings need more than $146 million in new construction, $106 million in additions and $199 million worth of renovations. The proposed fund will help correct immediate health and safety problems and adapt older buildings to the needs of modern education. Details.
