Abstract

A recent report, "Tourism and Maine's Future: Toward Environmental, Economic and Community Sustainability," released by the Maine Center for Economic Policy, calls into question some of the treasured assumptions made about tourism and the Maine economy. The authors recommended raising the lodging tax from 7 to 8 percent, and the tax on outdoor and recreational equipment from 6 to 7 percent, to fund both tourism and conservation initiatives. A conference on the report, was held at Bowdoin College in Brunswick last week and attracted about 100 participants from the tourism industry Some participants spoke forcefully against the findings. Details on the conference. With a related editorial.
