Abstract

"Maine Perspectives" piece on the "witch hunt" conducted against the reformulated gasoline additive MTBE, which is one of the first indicators of a gasoline spill, because it travels faster than other elements in the gasoline. It is not necessarily one of the most dangerous elements and has helped to lower the ozone levels in the state. The additive was discovered in groundwater in three locations in Maine, prompting a furor of anti-MTBE publicity.
