Last week Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt was joined by federal, state, and local officials in Augusta to sign the Lower Kennebec River Comprehensive Hydropower Settlement Accord. Under the agreement, the state will accept the Edwards Dam as a gift from its owners on January 1, 1999, and proceed with its removal in May. The removal will open 17 miles of river north to Waterville, improving runs of striped bass, sturgeon, salmon, and other fish. Details on the removal of the dam and benefits to and concessions by the four interested parties: Bath Iron Works; owners of the dams upriver, known as the Kennebec Hydro Developers Group; the owners of Edwards Dam; and the city of Augusta.
