Abstract

Vernal pools, which may only contain water in the fall, have as their distinguishing characteristic the fact that they do not support fish. But they do support a rich variety of invertebrates, and a sense that the amphibian population might be declining has some biologists and state and federal officials re-examining the pools and the regualtions which protect them.
