Abstract

Last week, a conference was convened in Freeport by Maine Coast Heritage Trust with the Wolfe's Neck Farm Foundation to brainstorm the future of farms and farming in Maine. Maine has 7,300 farms, with more than a million acres, and produces more food for consumption than any other New England state. The greatest value of farms might lie in intangibles--scenery, clean air and water, and lifestyle. These are being threatened by property taxes based on market value rather than current use, and the age farmers, half of whom are 60 or older. Details.
