Abstract
"Sportland" piece on Jack Bell, 34, of Gorham, who founded and coaches the Maine Blizzards, one of seven teams in the amateur, summer Eastern Football League. Few of the team members live in Maine. Of those that do, six live in Bell's house, along with his wife, Stephanie and their two children. What the Bells are actually doing is "running a sort of amateur football underground network for young African-American men from inner-city neighborhoods in Miami and Pittsburgh." Bell is trying to find jobs for the players as well as coaching them. He spend his own money on equipment, food, and transportation.
