Abstract

As the result of a suit brought against it by the Natural Resources Council of Maine, the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is belatedly enforcing the Surface Waters Toxics Control Program. Sappi and 12 other companies are subject to a re-assessment of license conditions due to violations and the DEP will add six staff positions to help test and monitor toxic discharges. The positions will be funded by increasing licensing fees for private companies that violate discharge standards. Includes details on violations the DEP has ignored and how it is beginning to take action on them.
