Abstract

"Other Voices" piece on the political appeal of creating a new east-west highway in Maine as a magic bullet to solve a variety of economic problems. Route 9, called the Airline, already exists as an east-west link and is in the process being upgraded. Major highways create corridor sprawl and Bangor could be turned into a frenetic transportation hub by a new highway. The money could be put to better use by upgrading existing roads in the state.
