Abstract

Long article about about Edward Johnson IV's plans to build a 100-foot pier into the narrowest bend in Bartlett's Narrows from his vacation home on Mt. Desert Island has pitted some of America's wealthiest families against local fishermen, sailors, and officials.. Wealthy neighbors, such as David Rockefeller, support the pier, but the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) is filing suit against the Department of Environmental Protection for granting Johnson. CFL hopes to change the permit process itself and force future docks to undergo more scrutiny. Details; related editorial.
