Abstract

"Other Voices" piece by Chris Holmes, the manager of the Maine Specialty Potatoe Farmers Cooperative, critical of the idea of the proposed research and development referendum that would support research at the University of Maine, and critical of the notion that the proposed East-West highway will bring economic development to Northern Maine. Holmes contends that the university functions like a "self-serving bureaucracy" and has not been in the vanguard of those championing new ideas for the economic revival of the region, and that an up-graded Route 1 would do as well as an East-West highway in carrying value-added products to market. Prosperity in Northern Maine, according to Holmes, would be better promoted by providing support for a great many projects, both large and small, "each utilitizing a value added service or product."
