Abstract

Robin Alden, former commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources and a founder of the Commercial Fisheries News, looks at the productivity of the Gulf of Maine, which is one of the state's most valuable assets, and asks if Maine is any closer to sustainable use of its ecosystem now than it was 30 years ago. The 200-mile limit, which went into effect in 1977, brought federal management that has profoundly changed Maine's fisheries. With special focus on what has been learned, and the newly formed University of Maine School of Marine Sciences.
