Abstract

"Continuum" piece on a recent Maine Forest Service report warning of an impending shortfall in available wood fiber. Paper companies own 7.7 million acres of Maine's woodlands. Last year they cut slightly more than 300,000 acres, and if they cut at an optimum 40-year cycle, they would need 12 million acres to do so at the same rate, which indicates that the Maine paper industry's constant growth is unsustainable.
