Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Baxter State Park and the controversy concerning who will be responsible for road maintenance within the park. The Maine Department of Transportation (DOT) has been allocated funding for this purpose since 1943, but park director Buzz Caverly wants the park to take over maintenance of the 51-mile perimeter road and short spurs and use DOT funds to buy materials only. Chuck Gadzik, chairman of the park authority, said the park is self-sustaining, and he is even prepared to do without the annual $80,00 in DOT funds. Gov. Percival Baxter, who donated the park to the state, made it clear that it should remain "forever wild."
