Abstract

"Practicum" piece on Wrendy Hayne, 33, who was murdered at the Augusta Mental Health Institute in April 1996, her relationship with fellow inmate Harold Pulsifer, who stabbed Hayne to death, and a $100,000 fund established in Hayne's name by her mother, Janice Burns, and stepfather, Don Burns. The money, which is part of the financial settlement Don and Janice Burns reached with the state, is being managed by the Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth and will be used to advocate for mental health care legislation, and improve communication among patients, guardians, medical staff and law enforcement.
