Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the wording in a proposed bill that would include sexual orientation in the Maine Human Rights Act, which a group of about 35 activists discussed at a meeting held on Dec. 5 in Bangor. Some gay-rights leaders believe it is important to clarify that the bill would not grant special rights to any group or individual, but would prevent the erosion of any person's rights or privileges. Michael Heath, executive director of the Christian Civic League of Maine, said the league would oppose the bill if the only change was the added language about special rights. David Garrity, vice president of the Maine Lesbian-Gay Political Alliance, said a final decision about language and group action will be made at the group's next meeting, which is scheduled to be held on Jan. 23.
