Abstract

"Educational Endeavors" piece on Evan Zislis, 24, a University of Maine graduate student whose goal is to be the administrative director of the Wilderness Academy, a secluded lodge in the Canadian Rockies, which he has not yet built. He envisions the school settled on 300 acres in Alberta, near Yoho National Park, offering 10 months of academic and wilderness schooling for 26 young teens a year free of charge. Zislis hopes to begin the project in 2005 and estimates startup costs at $5 million. Of the planned $1.5 million annual budget, $1 million is designated as salary for four teachers, one physician and nine permanent staffers. His plan for fund raising includes appealing to A-list celebrities and philanthropists drawn to environmental causes.
