Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on the acquisition of 185,000 acres of northern forest in Maine by The Nature Conservancy, which is buying the land from International Paper Company for $35.1 million. The tract, which encompasses some 286 square miles, includes about one-fifth of the one million-acre Upper St. John River Valley that the Northern Forest Alliance has targeted as needing special protection because of its ecological and recreational resources and undeveloped character. The transaction is the largest single conservation purchase in Maine's history and the largest tract of land ever purchased for conservation in the northeast U.S.
