Abstract

"Educational Endeavors" piece on the Whiting Village School, which has served local students since 1825, for most of that time utilizing two classrooms for nine grades. Ashley LeBlanc, superintendent of School Administrative District 77 based in East Machias, wants to take the grade 6-8 students from Whiting and two other K-8 schools in Cutler and Machiasport and move them to a new junior high or middle school in East Machias. LeBlanc says the plan makes both financial and educational sense. But Kate Jans, president of the Whiting parent-teacher organization, and other parents are opposed to the plan for numerous reasons. Whiting residents want the Village School to remain K-8 in 2000, its 175th anniversary.
