Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on George Smith who, at a recent Bureau of Parks and Lands meeting, threatened to use the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine to defeat a new land acquistion bond issue in the interest of blocking efforts toward designating some public lands areas as wilderness. Jym St. Pierre of Restore: The North Woods, said 90 percent of the state parks and 99.9 percent of the public reserved lands are open to full hunting and trapping. In total, less than one-tenth of one percent of the land in Maine is in national wilderness areas, in the White Mountain National Forest, and the state's only designated wilderness is 204,000-acre Baxter State Park.
