Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on legislative attempts to intervene in the operations of Baxter State Park with a bill to create additional handicapped access supported by the Fin and Feather Club of Millinocket. Park Director Buzz Caverly said the bill would have undermined the policymaking powers of the preserve's trustees, the three-member Baxter Park Authority. The Natural Resources Council of Maine and Restore: the North Woods opposed the bill as an attempt by the Fin and Feather Club to have the Legislature micro-manage the park. The Sportsman's Alliance of Maine took no position, but as a result of the flurry, Caverly plans to invite lawmakers to vist the wilderness preserve so they will better understand its operation.
