Abstract

"News & Issues" piece on Gov. Angus King's nomination of insider Martha Kirkpatrick to lead the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Kirkpatrick is currently the head of DEP's Bureau of Land and Water Quality, one of the four major divisions of the agency. The Legislature's Natural Resources Committee co-chairman Sen. Sharon Treat, D-Gardiner, said she is impressed with Kirkpatrick, but the committee's House chair, John Martin, D-Eagle Lake, said he would have preferred someone from outside the department. The committee will consider Kirkpatrick's appointment on May 19 after considering new candidates for the Board of Environmental Protection.
